The Faithful's Drive South: 49ers Sundays at Levi's Stadium

The 49ers play in Santa Clara now, forty miles from the city on their jerseys. On Sundays, the Faithful make the drive — and the region's strangest home-field geography works.

The Faithful's Drive South: 49ers Sundays at Levi's Stadium (San Francisco Bay City News)

No Bay Area sports fact takes longer to explain to a visitor than this one: the San Francisco 49ers play in Santa Clara. Levi's Stadium, opened in 2014 near Great America and the city's convention center, sits some forty miles south of the San Francisco city line — and on Sundays, Highway 101 and the VTA light rail fill with red and gold anyway.

The Faithful made the geography an identity. The Candlestick years ended, the team moved down the peninsula to a modern stadium in the heart of Silicon Valley, and the fan base — always regional, drawn from San Jose as much as from the Sunset — absorbed the drive into the ritual: tailgates in the Santa Clara lots, the museum and team store at the stadium, the sky over the South Bay turning gold at late-afternoon kickoffs.

Inside, the stadium is a different species from the Stick: open concourses, the Bay Area's tech money rendered in glass and solar panels, and sightlines built for a century Candlestick never pretended to serve. It has already hosted a Super Bowl — the game's 50th edition, in February 2016 — and settled into its role as the region's biggest room.

November is when 49ers seasons take their shape: divisional games, weather finally turning at kickoff, and a crowd that treats the drive home up 101 as part of the liturgy, win or lose, talk radio refereeing the fourth quarter the whole way north.

The jerseys still say San Francisco. The stadium says Santa Clara. The Faithful, forty miles of freeway notwithstanding, have never seemed confused about the arrangement — the team is the region's, and the region shows up.
